About Pelicans

These once-scarce birds call Grand Lake home on their annual
migration from early February – May and early September – November.
It is an incredible sight that everyone should see at least once.

The Grand Lake region celebrates the arrival of the White Pelican with the Pelican Festival, October 2-5, 2025.

The White Pelican is one of our largest living birds, weighing
between 10 & 17 pounds with a wingspan of 8 – 9 feet.

Adult white pelicans eat an average of four pounds of fish daily,
mostly chad. They swim about in the shallow water, dipping their
bills repeatedly for fish, letting excess water drain out the sides
of the gular pouch.
